THAT AID STRESS
MANAGEMENT

Are you feeling a burn-out at work or emotionally feeling on the edge?

The fast-paced lives that we lead today do not allow us time to take a few steps back and reassess what our body needs to continue to work at the same speed. We don’t usually have a breather and the constant battle of deadlines, meetings and our lifestyle often takes a toll on us, thereby causing us stress. Stress is often the first step to bigger problems and must be nipped right in the bud.

Natural herbs are proven to help with managing stress and have over time attracted the attention of researchers and doctors worldwide. Adaptogenic herbs and natural ingredients essentially help the body to shield itself against stressors - be it physical, chemical or biological. With minimum side-effects, multiple benefits and easy availability, natural herbs have the ability to control stress levels and calm the body. Historically, herbs were used to cure a number of ailments, including stress. In fact, traditional Chinese medicine has long used natural herbs to alleviate stress.

Read on to find out about five herbs that help
to relieve stress and manage anxiety:

ASHWAGANDHA

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb, commonly found in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. It has bee scientifically proven that Ashwagandha root extract is associated with a significant reduction in the level of stress and has an overall positive impact on the quality of life. Ashwagandha is also referred to as ‘Indian ginseng’ and is useful in calming the mind and body. In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is considered ‘Rasayana’, meaning that it helps to maintain youth - mentally and physically

RHODIOLA
ROSEA

Found in the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, Rhodiola has adaptogenic roots and contains more than 140 active ingredients, most prominent ones of them being rosavin and salidroside. This allows the body to strengthen its resistance against stress. Rhodiola has been found to improve symptoms of burnout, which can occur due to chronic stress. It offers treatment of symptoms related to stress and can prevent stress-related health complications as well.
This has been used as traditional medicine for centuries, particularly in Russia, Scandinavia and other regions. Though the efficacy of Rhodiola is still under debate, minimum side-effects make it a good choice to try out.

LEMON BALM EXTRACT

Studies suggest that Lemon balm extract helps the body to relax and has a soothing effect on symptoms of stress. The study also states that using lemon balm eases the negative mood effects of psychological stress, and the participants of the study reported a higher level of calmness and alertness. Although the study was small-scale, the results look promising and have paved the way for researchers to elaborate further on this. Another study also suggests that lemon balm extract makes gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) more readily accessible in the brain, thereby regulating the body’s response to stress.

5-HTP

5-Hydroxytryptophan, or more commonly known as 5-HTP, is used as a supplement to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and sleep-wake cycles. A healthy level of serotonin has an overall good impact on the body-positive mood and an accurate sleep-wake cycle. To connect the dots, mood and sleep are often related to stress. Due to its serotonin boosting abilities, 5- HTP can be considered as a possible option that can contribute to reducing stress. 5-HTP is not a constituent of any food that we usually intake, which is why there are several supplements available in the market. Manufacturers create these supplements from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia.

L-THEANINE

A non-protein amino acid that is commonly found in green tea and mushrooms, L-Theanine is well-known for its ability to induce relaxation without any form of sedation. Studies prove that the scores of stress-related symptoms like depression, anxiety trait and sleep significantly decreased after the usage of L-theanine. It was also found that it can help reduce stress-related blood pressure and heart rate. An added benefit of L-Theanine is that it stabilizes cognitive function that is often affected by stress hormones.

Stress is a normal bodily response that occurs when we face a difficulty. However, the level of stress that each person experiences is affected by several factors.
